Violence and suicide caused by antidepressants

By Dr. Peter Breggin

On March 22, 2004 the FDA issued an extraordinary Public Health Advisory that cautioned about the risks associated with the new generation of antidepressants (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Effexor, Serzone, and Remeron). The warning followed a public hearing at which dozens of family members of victims testified about suicide and violence committed by individuals taking these medications.

While stopping short of concluding the antidepressants definitely caused suicide, the FDA warned that they might do so in a small percentage of children and adults. In the debate over drug-induced suicide, little attention has been given to the FDA’s additional warning that certain behaviors are “known to be associated with these drugs,” including “anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), hypomania, mania.”

From agitation and hostility to impulsivity and mania, the FDA’s litany of antidepressant-induced behaviors is identical to those induced by PCP, methamphetamine, and cocaine, drugs known to cause aggression and violence. These older stimulants and most of the newer antidepressants cause similar effects as a result of their influencing brain levels of the same neurotransmitter, serotonin.

A new FDA warning issued on January 31, 2008 declared that yet another group of chemical agents used to treat mood disorders carried the risk of “symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, hostility, mania and hypomania” which “may be precursors to emerging suicidality.” This time the culprits are antiepileptic drugs – medications used to control seizures. Because they cause sedation, these drugs are commonly used in psychiatry as “mood stabilizers.” As a result of an

orchestrated psychiatric campaign to diagnose children with “bipolar disorder,” increasing numbers of children are being given these drugs.

This group of anti-seizure medications includes carbamazapine (brand names Tegretol, Equetro), gabapentin (Neurontin), lamotrigine (Lamictal), topiramate (Topamax), and valproate (Depakote). All of these drugs are being prescribed for varying psychiatric purposes, including the treatment of anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Our Third annual “Storming the Gates of Hell” “21 Alive 2 Thrive” was absolutely Awesome beyond description!!! We give many Thanks to Ryan Saari, Senior Pastor of Pasadena Baptist Church for his heart of generosity and service. Most people I am sure did not even know who he was, he did not want to be seen; only to serve we were honored by his humility. Also, many thanks to Youth Pastor Mike Trofe and his oldest son John, their youth group who worked none-stop to make everything beautiful for our conference, and it was absolutely beautiful! Rev. Ronnie Alicea is without a doubt the Face of “Storming the Gates of Hell”. He is known for his God given talent of bringing together Christian Artist who want to use their talent to bring Glory to our Amazing God, and they all did just that!

From the opening drama, featuring Selene Alicea and Radical Youth Ministries who opened with “You’re an Army dressed for Battle “ by: Rick Peno.  Rev. Ronnie Alicea took his sword and Knighted the youth one by one as the chorus rang out:   “You’re an Army take the land”. The youth ran into the audience and brought another solider up front to be knighted! In no time the entire audience was on their feet declaring “You’re an Army take the land!!”  THE POWER OF GOD FELL MIGHTILY!! Hallelujah!!! .

Technical difficulties can lead to small delays, but sometime that is just Gods way of introducing someone else into the agenda; such was the case for two Spirit filled young Ladies from Georgia, Dora and Anna. They blessed us with a few songs from a guitar supplied by our Daniel; you see they had come straight from the Airport, not knowing that God wanted to use them to fill our delay.  Such a spirit of worship filled the sanctuary, washing over everyone.  Andrea ministered with a Worship dance that she had choreographed herself; Andrea so was surprised at Gods impromptu call to use her gift. Later she would give her compelling testimony of many years of struggle with depression and Anorexia and thoughts of suicide. Andrea gives thanks to someone who had cared enough to bring her to our first “Strom the Gates” she has been able to recover, not through doctors, medication or programs, but by the mighty power of the Love of Christ. Her voice of triumph will bring hope to many, only God knows how many lives will be saved by her testimony. Though Andrea is only 18 yrs. old she has much to share from her road of suffering to her wonderful recovery, so we have asked her to come and share her journey at every one of our conferences.

The Front Band graced us with high energy praise and worship inside;

Outside: Pastor Mike Trofe and several of the youth from “YNot” were getting the Barbeque ready for lunch.

Big Thanks to Pastor Say Kim for donating almost all of the food and soda; he also brought his own outside-stage for the “Rappers” and singers “Beyond Skills”, Pastor Bennie Reyes and Deshaun, many others. Brother Al Dix from “Catching Hope” and our faithful tech Daniel were there to help get everything set-up and assist wherever needed. Brother Al also got our ice donated by Dons’ Dock at Johns Pass Thanks a Million Guys you truly are a major Blessing!!!

During Lunch the Tampa Bay “Heaven’s Saints Motorcycle Ministry” provided heart stopping Entertainment as they performed their amazing stunts!!  As they say the crowd went Wild! A little entertainment can lighten things up a bit, when you are tackling some very uncomfortable subjects, like childhood sexual abuse.

For me Pastor Moe captured the reason for why we “Storm the Gates of Hell” as he shared his deep childhood wounds of sexual abuse, and the Power and love of our heavenly Father to heal; many hurting men came forward for prayer,(women and young ladies too) Pastor Moe and his wife listened, wept and prayed with each of them to be able to receive complete emotional healing. If we are ever going to recover from our past, emotional healing of our soul wounds is vital … I love Ray Bolts song “That’s what this Alter is for you don’t have to carry these burdens any more…” If you have not read “Nicks’ Story” Please read it and you will understand why Pastor Moe’s’ ministry was so dear to my heart.

Time will not allow me to share the entire ministry that took place or to mention everyone who brought their gift and presented themselves as an instrument for the Masters’ use. But I must share this with you, at least 3 people came to the conference having little or no hope that anyone could help them; they did not know each other, but all of them were planning to commit suicide. One person brought a gun and thought they would just slip-away un-noticed to the back of the grounds and end their life. But our God is a “reader and a discerner of the intents of men’s’ hearts “He knows how to post Angels (sometimes disguised as men) to reach-out at the right moment and help a hurting child heal. No, time will not allow for me to share with you all the miraculous moments that took place at the Third annual “Storming the Gates of Hell” but know this many now have the opportunity to reach “21 Alive 2 Thrive.”

We want to acknowledge our over-whelming gratitude to all who had a part in making this Life Saving, Life Changing Conference possible:

 Pastor Ryan Saari Senior Pastor of Pasadena Baptist Church; Youth Pastor Mike Trofe, his sons John and Jonathon and all of their youth, of Pasadena Baptist Church;

Christian Drug Addiction

Life Challenges >> Christian Drug Addiction
Christian Drug Addiction – The Journey to Drug Addiction or Alcoholism Christian drug addiction is a heartbreaking experience for individuals, their families, and churches. No one intentionally sets out to become a full-fledged drug addict or alcoholic. Yet despite all the warnings millions of people become addicts. Why? Because prior to that first puff, snort, or drink, the mind has already been self deceived by thinking: “I won’t become addicted, I know when to stop or I can handle a few drinks or getting high a few times.”
But, God’s Word, the Bible, gets right to the heart of the problem by telling us what mind-altering substances do to the heart. Why? God cares about the chemical dependant person and wants the best for them. Alcohol and drugs do more harm to an individual than what meets the eye.
Hosea 4:11 says, “Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.”
Our heart is where natural God-given emotions reside. To have ones heart taken away is to take away our desire for natural things that God has given us; like family, healthy relationships, good work, and moral ethics. For example; a person can and will leave their family for the bottle or drugs. This is not natural; its mind boggling to say the least. If the heart was not taken away, you couldn’t pay a person enough money to leave their loved ones just so they can get drunk or high repeatedly.
God instilled in the heart of each person to love and to be loved. For example, little girls pretend to be mommies as young as three years of age because nurturing was instilled in their hearts by God. It brings pleasure to the heart to nurture a baby, but if the heart has been taken away, then nurturing becomes a burden.
It’s very difficult to reason with someone who has had their heart changed to unnatural thinking. You can point out that God, family, and work is important and that drinking or drugging is destroying their relationship in all these areas, but you will encounter friction and excuses. Before addiction takes place, that same person would admit that drinking and drugs destroys, but after addiction takes place it’s very hard for them to see the destruction that is taking place in their life.
Christian Drug Addiction – Only God Can Fix an Addictive Heart Since Christian drug addiction begins in the heart, the heart is what needs to be fixed. Only God can fix an addicted heart. Human reasoning can only go so far, but God’s Word can judge the attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
In other words, the Word of God can reveal things in the heart that we aren’t even aware of. God’s Word is spirit and truth and if our hearts have been deceived, only the truth of God’s word can undeceive it.
If a person could foresee the unnatural change that takes place in their heart before substance abuse, most people would stay far away from this heart-altering substance. God warns us because we cannot outsmart addiction. It will change our hearts! God designed the heart, therefore He knows far above what doctors, psychiatrist, substance abuse counselors and the media know about the damage that happens to an addicted heart.
Without God, we are no match for peer pressure and the media’s constant bombardment of how it’s cool to get high.
Christian Drug Addiction – God Loves the Addict “I worked in a chemical dependency program for four years and watched addict after addict try to pull their lives back together only to find that it’s much harder than they could have imagined. No one wants to be a drug addict or alcoholic, but when we dabble in what God warns against, the inevitable will happen. Our hearts will be taken away (changed) and by the time we come to the realization of this, we are addicted and much damage has been done,” says Donna.
“God loves the addict and wants to set them free because He desires the very best for them. He can restore the heart and bring healing to the life of the addict if the addict will turn to Him. How does He do this? He does it through His Word. His Word is life and peace, wisdom and healing, sound and powerful. It is full of love and compassion for everyone who will run to Him.
“God is into restoration and no one can restore like God. The Creator of all things can restore. He will fill the heart with what is right and good because He is the standard. He is greater than all our problems, doubts, and fears. He is love, He doesn’t have love, He is love, and He doesn’t love us a little or a lot. He loves with all His being. 1 John 4:8says, ‘…God is love.’

  • Recognize that as human beings — addict or not — we need God because we cannot make it without Him.
  • Find support. We all need to get involved in a Bible-teaching church and the addict is no exception. Find a group of people to support you in your recovery — both physically and through prayer support.
  • Find Christian drug addiction treatment. Some churches have Bible-based Christian drug addiction recovery programs that can catapult the addict into a life of healing, meaning, and purpose. If your church does not have a program such as this, consider a Christian drug treatment center or Christian drug rehab program.”
Proverbs 4:20-23 encourages us, “My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

“THANK YOU”

Dear Pastor Tim
I can’t thank you enough for allowing us to come-in and share with your precious young people the love of God; and the love that we have in our hearts for them. I was over-whelmed by how attentive, polite and open they were. Many of the young ladies came to the table to share their feeling of sadness and thoughts about taking their own lives. It is so heart-breaking to hear this; I just wanted to scoop them up in my arms and take them home with me. I hope I was able to help them to understand through the videos and speakers that Christ will come and dwell inside them, He will be an ever present help in time of trouble. He will be the friend that stays closer than a brother.
I pray that through something that was said, their hearts and mind were open to the Great Love that our heavenly Father has for each and every one of them. I pray they will know the depth of His love and how very much He values each of them. I pray our message came through that we can only have a real Relationship with Him by reading His Word. We must spend time in His presence in order to receive the Revelation of his love for us. Only then can we truly begin to trust him. We must trust Him not only with the good things in our lives, but we must choose by an act of our own will to trust Him even in the darkest hours of neglect, abandonment, disappointment, heart-break, hunger or abuse.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is something that will separate us from Gods love, bitterness and unforgiveness; not that He will move away from us but bitterness and un-forgiveness will drive us away from Him. I believe more teaching is needed in our churches about how to forgive; forgiveness it a decision! Not a warm fuzzy feeling. Forgiveness is an act of my will…I “will” to obey the Word of God, not because I like what it says or that I fully agree with it, but because; I understand that the God that made me and Loves me so much that he would let His son take my punishment has only my best interest in mind. (Sadly, I have spent the better part of my life fighting against this truth; I believe most of the bad things that happen in my adult life, would not have happened if I had not been in rebellion against the Word of God.)  It has only been eight years since I have fully surrendered my will to God’s will. Even when we do not understand what is happening to us we can rest in the knowledge that He is preparing us to rule and reign with Him for eternity. We must all come to that place of surrender. That means that when what we want, or believe does not line up with the Word of God…We are wrong! It is us who must change; we must bend our will to His.
The darkest hour of my life came without a doubt on the morning of August 11, 2009 when the Police officer knocked on my door…
It has been said that we have but a nano-second to decide how we will react in times of great difficulty or tragedy, I know this to be true.
I believe our children’s inability to grasp this reality is one of the reason they are committing suicide at such an alarming rate. They begin to rehearse all of life’s disappointments, and then they start to believe the lie of Satan as He whispers to them that nothing will ever change for the better. We must teach them ahead of the temptation how to take a step back, recognize the voice of the enemy by measuring his words against what the Word of God says. Then they will choose to believe His Words (as an act of their will) and to think right thoughts, about themselves. Remember that God does have a great plan for them.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for well-being, and not for calamity, in order to give you a future and a hope.
Then by God’s grace they will be able to make right choices even in the face of great desire, peer pressure or frustration. We must prepare them with the Word of God ahead of time, then and only then will they be able to look past that moment of pain, fear, hurt, anger or disappointment, and make a right decision. They will be able to stand strong knowing that this MOMENT WILL PASS and sometimes the best decision they can make is to simply WAIT!
Life is making chooses moment by moment, every decision large and small will affect the rest of our lives; our decision will also affect the lives of those who truly do love us. We all must choose daily weather we will be victims or victors, weather we will lay down and let the trauma of one, or as in my case multiple traumas define and defeat us. We must choose to believe the Words of our Loving Heavenly Father above all else.
The temptation to feel sorry for myself was great when Nick took his life, especially in lieu of all that I had already overcome; physical and sexual abuse by my own father (and uncle), the physical abuse on me, my siblings and my mother, hunger and constant fear; my own failed marriages, four of my five children having been sexually-molested; my own failed attempt at suicide…a fire, tornado and a flood. I had overcome all these terrible problems but the most defeating thing was the heaviness of the shame one feels over the things that have happened to them. As a mother my shame was even deeper because I was unable to protect my children; my dysfunction from the abuse of my childhood, caused me to make poor decision after poor decision… and now the worst thing that could ever happen to a mother had happened… my baby boy had taken his own life at seventeen.

“We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
C.S. Lewis
Oh how I wish that I had not turned away from God in my 20’s how very different my life and the lives of my children could have been. If only I had not let the lies of the Enemy confuse me! How I wish I had known the Word of God so I could have fought against the temptations that ship wrecked my life!
I did not intend to share so much of my story but felt that you might want to share my letter with all the youths who shared their struggles with me. I am very sorry I wasn’t able to share more with the boys and pray with them. I will make sure to have the men watching more closely next time and I want to be able pray with the boys myself.
I will be doing “21 Alive 2 Thrive” throughout 2013, I am looking at Williams Park downtown St. Peter for the last Saturday in January we can have the Gazebo for six hours so there will be lots of music, dramas and testimonies of God’s amazing power to change lives. I will send you updates and look forward to seeing you and your youth at as many of the events as possible. My prayer is that many churches will be inspired to bring other hurting young people so their lives can be changed. I pray we can bring the Word of God in such a Powerful way that those who hear it will be spared the profound pain of drug and alcohol-addiction, and the terrible consequences that come with sex outside of marriage.
As you know I feel honored to have been trusted with this great work, it is still hard for to believe sometimes, that with 10-12 suicides a day in the State of Florida alone I am the one God has picked for this life saving work.
I thank you again for opening your heart and doors to us! I pray God will Bless you and yours in all that you do for our Great God.
